William “Bill” Page Hidey, 91, formerly of Woodlawn, Md. passed peacefully from this world on Tuesday March 25, 2014. He was born in Woodlawn, Md., the son of the late Page Hamilton and Esther Marie Hidey, also of Woodlawn. Bill is survived by his sister Margaret Jean Hidey and Brother-in-law Aubrey DeWitt Maring, nephew and niece Mark and Melanie Maring, Preceded in death by his sister Ruth Ellen Maring and nephew the late Michael Maring
Bill was drafted into the U. S. Army during 1943 and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, He was honorably discharged in 1945 at Ft. Meade, Md. During this service, Bill was a Technician Fifth Grade, with Company H, 2nd Battalion, Headquarters and Service Group. He chauffeured General Douglas MacArthur and his wife in Japan and chauffeured Admiral Chester W. Nimetz to the USS Missouri for the formal surrender of Japan. Upon arrival, Admiral Nimetz invited Bill on board the ship to witness the surrender.
Back in Woodlawn, Bill was a farmer. Before WWII, he sold farm products off a pony wagon. He had a farm in Woodlawn and in Marston, Carroll County, Md., known as Gypsy Hill. Bill sold his farm produce as well as other goods through his business Bill’s Rolling Market. Bill leaves behind many dear friends and close associates from his business days in Woodlawn and Carroll County.
Visitors can call at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield, Md. On Saturday March 29, 2014 from 2 to 5 PM. A Committal Service will be held on Saturday April 5, 2014, 11:00 AM at the Woodlawn Cemetery Chapel. Bill will be interred with his parents.
