Vergie L Pifer
July 24, 1941 – June 30, 2025
In loving memory of Vergie L Pifer (Sykesville, Maryland), who passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at the age of 83.
Vergie was born July 24, 1941, in Berwick, PA to the late Ardella (Augustine) and Wilbur Laidacker. She graduated from Berwick High School in 1959. She married the love of her life, Donald Pifer, in March 1965. They moved to Maryland and started a family but also spent many weekends at their farmhouse near Benton, PA where they entertained friends and family. Tragically, her husband passed away suddenly in 1990, just after they celebrated 25 years of blissful marriage.
Ten years later, she met Bill Bunzey, who would remain her companion for over 20 years before his passing in 2021. She and Bill loved to travel and spend time at each of their homes, as they resided in different states. She considered his family as her family and cherished all the time spent with them.
Vergie took great pride in her work, spending most of her career as an Executive Assistant at The Rouse Company in Columbia, MD. She was well respected and known for her ability to organize and streamline processes. She retired in 2003.
Vergie had many friends and loved to have fun! She enjoyed music and dancing and having a good time. She was spontaneous and jumped at any chance she could get to travel, go shopping, and spend time with her friends.
Vergie was creative and talented and enjoyed many hobbies including painting, sewing, and quilting. While she was never trained as an interior decorator, she had a knack for creating beautiful spaces. Her love of travel took her to all 50 states, as well as places such as Bermuda, the Bahamas, Canada, France, and her favorite, Italy. She was also fiercely independent and resourceful. Whenever she encountered a roadblock, she was quick to find an inventive solution – a true do-it-yourselfer!
Her children and grandchildren were truly her pride and joy. Having her family all together was what made her happiest. She especially loved holiday meals with her family, where she cooked elaborate meals and decorated beautifully for each occasion.
She is survived by her son, Matthew; her daughter, Mindi (husband Jim); her grandchildren, Emily, Ashley, and Renee; her siblings, Jim, Cindy, and Wayne; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 10th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home (1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield, MD 21784). A memorial service will follow at 1:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider donating to the National Aphasia Association to support Primary Progressive Aphasia research (https://aphasia.org/ways-to-donate/).
