January 20, 2016 – February 23, 2018

On February 23, 2018, at age 102, Dorothy May Sunderland, passed peacefully from life to life eternal. A woman of strong faith and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-, and great-great grandmother, she will be remembered for her dedicated service to Memorial United Methodist Church in Baltimore and Grace United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg, her work on behalf of the Asbury Benevolence Fund, and the many ways in which she shared her energy, time, and love with family and friends.

Born on January 20, 1916, Doris did not have an easy childhood. Her father died from tuberculosis when she was just 4 years old and when she was 8, she lost her left eye to diphtheria. But she was resilient and came from a family that pulled together to overcome challenges. At a time when it was not common for women to work outside of the home, she held a job at Pittsburgh Plate Glass company, for over 20 years.

In 1934, she married the love of her life, Columbus Lee Sunderland. They would go on to share nearly 50 years of marriage: creating many wonderful memories together—chaperoning Nancy and her friends as UMYF counselors, enjoying trips to Ocean City, playing cards with family and friends, entertaining, travelling, making grape jelly, and their favorite pastime – spending time with Nancy, John, and the grandkids!

Strong-willed and feisty til the end, Doris overcame 2 bouts of cancer, made multiple trips to Florida in her later years, drove until she was 91, and lived independently until she was 97! She is survived by her beloved daughter, Nancy and son-in-law, John Easto; her grandchildren: David Easto and wife, Laurie; Linda Foster and husband, Bart; Barbara Jacques and husband, Art; and John Philip Easto and wife, Liselle; great-grandchildren: Tyson Easto, TyAnn Neill, Robert Easto, Eric Easto, Becky Aselstine, Kenny Foster, Alyson King, Jenny King, Sarah Easto, and Peter Easto; and great, great-grandchildren: Lexi, Sophi, Kennedi, Luke, Caleb, Kamiyah, and Katie!
