Charles Rippeon
November 26, 1924 — October 13, 2013
Charles Monroe Rippeon, Sr. “Frecks” to his family and friends and “Rip” to his Local Carpenters Union 101 Co-workers, of Unionville, Maryland, was called home by our Heavenly Father on Sunday, October 13, 2013. His final days were spent at the Frederick County Kline Hospice House surrounded by his wife of 61 years, Emma Jane Chipley Rippeon and their children and grandchildren.
Born on November 26, 1924, at home in Unionville, Maryland, Charles was the son and fifth child of the late Harvey Franklin and Hilda Elizabeth Martin Rippeon. He began working with his father at a very young age thrashing wheat and corn and working as a farmhand on neighboring farms until 1942, when at the age of 18, he was drafted into the US Army and participated in WWII as an infantryman, served as a reconnaissance car commander with Troop D, 88th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. After three months of military service, Mr. Rippeon was promoted to the rank of Buck Sergeant, sent overseas to toured Europe under the command of General Patton. After completing three years of military service and being honorably discharged, Mr. Rippeon returned home and has remained a life-long resident of Unionville, Maryland.
Mr. Rippeon was also a life-long attendee and a 71 year member of Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, Mt. Airy, MD, and a life member of VFW Post 8806 of Union Bridge, MD, and a 3rd degree Mason and a member of Plymouth 143 Masonic Lodge also located in Union Bridge, MD. Throughout his life, Mr. Rippeon enjoyed working with his hands, carpentry, woodworking, planting and tending his vegetable and flower gardens, being a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother and life-long friend and role model to many. Mr. Rippeon was a simple man, richly content with his life and accomplishments and always thankful for his many blessings especially his good health, the health of his family and freedom. Mr. Rippeon knew no strangers and was quick to extend a warm smile and handshake and was always quick to give a helping hand when needed. Up to the end of his earthly journey, Mr. Rippeon was defined as a good and sweet man, loving, kind, honest and a hard worker and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In addition to Emma Jane, his wife of 61 years, Mr. Rippeon is survived by six children and six grandchildren; Debra Rippeon, Unionville, MD, and son Donald “DJ” Covey, Jr., Charles Rippeon, Jr., Unionville, MD, and daughter Cricket Amanda Cook, David Rippeon, Cumberland, MD, Connie Eyler, Woodsboro, MD, husband Herb and sons Luke and Douglas Poole, Melissa Potts, Mt. Airy, MD, husband Glenn and son Matthew and Jennifer Cevario, Thurmont, MD, husband Mike and daughter Nicole, three sisters, Elizabeth Fogle, Johnsville, MD, Betty Rose Duvall, Damascus, MD and Virginia “Skimp” Carter, Baltimore, MD, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Rippeon was preceded in death by brothers, Earl “Peewee” Rippeon, Harvey “Bags” Rippeon and Daniel “Buck” Rippeon, sisters, Mary “Sis” Waddell, Anna Emerson and Ruth Hoffman and many childhood friends.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 7-9 PM on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) with a Masonic Lodge Service Wed. at 8:30 PM and then on Thursday, October 17, 2013 another viewing from 10:00-11:00 at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren. The Funeral Service for Mr. Rippeon will be held at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, 13356 Glissans Mill Road, Mt. Airy, MD at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 17, 2013 with the Rev. L. Ross Kirk and Pastor Wallace “Bud” Lusk officiating. Interment will follow in church cemetery.
Immediately after burial in the church fellowship hall, the members of Locust Grove will host a Christian reflection meal for all attendees.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Rippeon’s name may be made to the Locust Grove Church Good Samaritan Fund, 13356 Glissans Mill Road, Mt.
