Charles Mardel Mathews, Sr. 89, of Mt. Airy, died October 28 after a short illness. Born September 28, 1936, to the late Edgar Mardel and the late Anna Mildred Perkins Mathews in Baltimore, he was the longest-living member in a family tree that he traced back to the start of the nineteenth century. After the early death of his mother, he was raised by his grandmother in South Baltimore.
A 1954 graduate of Mount St. Joseph’s High School, Charles was first person in his family to finish high school. He graduated from Loyola University of Maryland in 1959 and accepted a position in the accounting department of Domino Sugar. Charles stayed with the company for 40 years, retiring as Regional Controller for the parent corporation, but always working at the iconic plant in Baltimore.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Patricia Swickey Mathews, his uncle Charles Raymond Mathews. He is survived by Bernadette Mathews, his wife of 67 years, and his children: Charles Jr. and his wife Susan of McLean, VA and Paul and his wife Deborah of Sykesville, MD. He is also survived by grandchildren, Katie Mathews Inch, Erin Mathews Harrington, Parker Mathews, and Emma Mathews, and great-grandchildren Wesley and Blake Inch and Pheobe Harrington.
Charles began a biographical note by writing, "The most successful thing in my life is to have been a part of creating a strong family around me."
Funeral Mass will be said on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church1125 St Michael's Rd, Mt Airy, MD 21771.
Interment at St. Michael's Church Cemetery.
