Helen Vivian Harris, 84, formerly of District Heights, MD passed away early Christmas morning, 2007. She had come to live with her eldest sons family in Carroll County during 2005. Born May 8, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Margaret ‘Little Grandma’ and Vernon Fowler and was predeceased by loving stepfather Claude Eavey. She was the wife of Ellsworth ‘Midge’ R. Harris who passed away in 1993. She is survived by her children and spouses Vernon L. and Judy Harris of Mt. Airy, Debbie and Michael Hall of Virginia, Ronnie R. Harris of Chambersburg, PA, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1great great grandchild. A Memorial Service will be held to honor her birthday, prior to her interment in the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carroll County Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave. Westminster, MD 21157.

Perry Jonathan Suter, age 33, of New Windsor, Maryland, died January 11, 2008 at home. Perry wa sthe spouse of Stacey Lea Suter. Perry was born 9/9/74, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of the late Francis P Suter and Martha M Suter. Perry was employed by Skips Auto Collision. He was very family oriented, loved playing with his children, painting cars and four wheeling. Perry is survived by daughter Alysse M. Suter and son Peter J. (PJ) Suter. He is also survived by brothers Francis P Suter Jr., Phillip Suter, Paul Suter and sister Penni Tyler, and was pre-deceased by brother Peter Suter. Additionally he has 9 nieces and nephews. She was the spouse of the late Robert Clayton Jenkins, Sr. She was born May 30, 1921 in Bedford, PA the daughter of the late Addison Boore and Late Carrie Pauline Beegle Boore. Mrs. Jenkins was a waitress at the Double T Diner in Ellicott City, MD and also previously worked as a Book Binder at Faccett Publishing in Gaithersburg, MD Surviving her are Daughter Carole Lamb of MT. Melvin Charles “ Mel” Jones of Westminster was born February 28, 1917 in Canton, MD His family moved to Baltimore County in 1925 where Mel attended county schools, graduating from Kenwood High School. Mr. Jones began his career at Bethlehem Steel and worked there until World War II broke out. He served five years in the Army and left with the rank of Sergeant. He spent the early years of the war serving with the United States Saving Bonds Military Show that toured the country to encourage the purchase of War Bonds. He was particularly proud of his service in the European Theatre during the last two years of the war. Mr. Jones married his childhood sweetheart, Louise Blische. Following the war, the couple settled in Baltimore County and Mel resumed his career with Bethlehem Steel. He was eventually promoted into management and served there until his retirement. Following retirement Mr. Jones became involved with senior activities and assumed leadership posts in numerous senior organizations and other community groups. He was also active in supporting the political campaigns of Congresswoman Helen Delich Bentley who became a close friend. The Congresswoman frequently contacted Mr. Jones to get his input regarding key legislation that affected senior citizens. He was active in volunteer work at Franklin Square Hospital, logging more than 1200 hours in the Physical Therapy Department. Mel also gave many hours to the Essex Community College Theatre program. He earned his associate degree from Essex Community College. Mr. Jones is survived by his wife Louise Blische Jones of Westminster, Daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Robert Furney of Westminster, 3 Grandchildren David and Doug Leasure of MD and Denise Leasure Connolly of Westfield, NY. 5 Great-Grandchildren ranging from age 9 to nine months- Kylan, Cassia, and Khelsa Connolly, Gregory Leasure and Nathaniel Leasure and by two sisters Catherine Thorn and Marie Schehlein and numerous nieces and nephews. Mel Jones led a full and valuable life. He enjoyed people. He was always enthusiastic and outgoing and was well liked by all who came in contact with him. His last few years were spent in the Bonds Forest Assisted living facility where he became a respected friend to the entire staff and other residents. A memorial service will be held Friday January 25, 2008 11 AM at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 7834 Eastern Ave. Baltimore, MD 21224. |

He was born June 16, 1945 in Montgomery County, MD the son of the late Norman Alvin Russ Sr. and the late Edith Gertrude Russ (nee Jolley). He was a welder. James Paul Yeater, 81 of Baltimore, MD formerly of Clarksburg,WV, died Tuesday January 15, 2008 at his daughters home. He was the spouse of the late Lillian Lucille Carter Yeater. He was born January 12, 1927 in Clarksburg, WV the son of the Dewey and Iva Gertrude Heater Yeater. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He was an Administrator and School Teacher in Baltimore County for 25 years. He also taught in WV at The Bridgeport High School. He loved spending time with his family. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and Associate Member of Elders Baptist Church. Surviving him are Daughter and Son-in-law- Lael and Ben Henry of Sykesville. Florence Elizabeth Strohmer (nee Vesper), of Woodstock, a loving mother, aunt, and farm wife died peacefully on Monday February 4, 2008 at Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown, with her family and friends at her bedside. She was 77 years young. Florence E Vesper was born and raised in Essex, MD. She spent most of her childhood on the family produce farm with her three sisters. She went to Kenwood HS then later graduated in 1951 from Church Home Hospital as a Registered Nurse. After graduation she worked at Hopkins, St Agnes and various hospitals throughout Baltimore and finally retiring from Baltimore County General (Northwest Hospital). During her younger years she enjoyed traveling to include driving across country to CA, NYC and trips to the beach. This independent and traveled woman finally settled down at the age of 30 to George Strohmer a local farmer in Woodstock, MD. They would have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary this year. By 35 she had her hands full with 4 children, Bud, Dee, Richard and Brenda. Florence kept herself busy managing the farm with her husband, a dedicated supporter in Baltimore County 4-H as a Club Leader in and participated in Baltimore County Farm Bureau. Florence never tired of taking local trips around the area and entertaining the numerous guests who frequently visited the farm for words of wisdom or just to enjoy her company. Florence is survived by her husband George J. Strohmer Sr, children George Jr (Bud), Dee, Richard and Brenda Strohmer all of Woodstock, sister Eileen Hoppert of Ocala, FL, and nieces Amy Van Gulick and Beth Borkenheim and nephew Barry Hoppert. She is also survived by other loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Albert and Elizabeth Vesper and Sisters Doris Jennewine and Shirley Vesper. He was born February 14, 1929 in Rumsey, Kentucky the son of the late Harlan Morgan Higgs and the late Sarah Marie Higgs (nee Welborn). He was employed by Supreme Equipment-now called Capus Automations Services. He was a Master Sergeant in the US Air Force for 22 years and member of Mt. Airy American Legion Post 191. Survived by wife of 33 years Betsy Higgs, Children- Chuck Higgs of Lodi, CA, Holly Lawhorn and husband Herb of Ashburn, VA, Tammy Loxton and husband John of Clifton, VA, John Keane of Sterling, VA, Tracey Kiser and husband David of Leesburg, VA and Jennifer Keane & Husband Duke Frederick of Lovettsville, VA. Subock, Sr. and the late Bertha N. Subock (nee Deitz). He retired in 1995 with 30 years of service as an Electronic Engineer for NSA Department of Defense. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America. He was active in Holy Family R.C. Church in Randallstown. He loved reading and a lover of animals. He was a bee keeper. He was very helpful in his neighborhood. He served in the US Army form 1953-1955. He was the husband of Faith A. Subock (nee Watts). He was the father of Robert L. Thomas Paul Miller, age 64, of Mt. Airy, Died Thursday February 21, 2008 at his home. He was born November 12, 1943 in Ellis, Kansas the son of the late Nicholas Benjamin Miller and the late Elaine Pickinpaugh Miller. He was a retired Computer Technician and he loved his grandchildren. He was the husband of Margarete Liebegott Miller. Survived by daughter Vivian Marie Miller of Texas and sons Thomas Michael Miller of Laurel and Paul Gerhard Miller of Mt. Airy. Also survived by former daughter in law Debra White. She was born March 28, 1957 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of the late Howard William Schuder and the late May Eva Evans Schuder. She was the Assistant Controller for Turf Valley Resort and before that worked for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company(A&P) She has a Bachelors degree in Accounting from Towson State University. Surviving her in addition to her husband are step-mother Joan Schuder, Son William Robert Starr of Sykesville, Brother Howard Schuder of Red Lion, PA, Step-brothers Tim Judge of Perry Hall and Tom Judge of Annapolis and Step-sister Karen Judge of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Rea Shadeline Lyburn, 61 of Westminster, MD, died suddenly while vacationing with her Loving husband Jack Lyburn in Aruba on March 11, 2008. Mrs. Lyburn was born April 28, 1946 in Baltimore MD the daughter of the late Lawrence L. Shadeline and the late Lois Laird Shadeline. Mrs. Lyburn started her teaching career in the Baltimore City School System, then taught 10 years at Hernwood Elementary School in Baltimore County, became a teacher at First United Presbyterian Christian Pre-School and Kindergarten, where she later became the director for 11 years before retiring, She was an avid golfer and member of Piney Branch Country Club, She enjoyed quilting and bowling and was a volunteer at Carroll Hospital Center’s White Rabbit. Surviving in addition to her husband are Son and Fiancé Bryan Lyburn and Katie Marsh of Frederick, MD Daughter and son-in-law Rachel and Shawn Anglemyer of Littlestown, PA, Son Andrew Lyburn of Towson, MD Granddaughter Savannah Rea Anglemyer of Littlestown, PA and Brother John Shadeline of Hampstead. Ralph DeWitt Condon, 90 of Woodbine, MD, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center. He was the spouse of Freda Elaine Baile Condon. He was born January 29, 1918 in Woodbine, MD the son of the late George W. Condon and the late Carrie Mae Bloom Condon. Mr. Condon had his own farm for 8 years. He was a Pole Lineman for M.F. Arrington and Sons and later worked as a Pole Lineman and Electrician for Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab before retiring in 1983. He was a veteran of the United States Army, A Member of American Legion Post #31 Westminster, MD , A member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, old movies, country music and spending time with his little Angels. Surviving in addition to his wife are Daughter and son-in-law Linda and Raymond Conaway of Westminster, Daughter Alice Scott of Woodbine. Grandsons and wives Ryan and Jennifer Conaway, Brant and Heidi Conaway. Great-granddaughters Lauren and Meghan Conaway and great-grandson Austin Conaway. Robert Lee Keiser, age 76, of Woodbine, died Tuesday March 18, 2008 at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster, MD. He was born July 2, 1931 in Pittsburgh, PA the son of the late Charles Henry Keiser and the late Mabel brown Keiser. He was a retired auto worker for Ford Motor Company. He attended Winfield Bible Church and was in the 82nd airborne in the Army as a Sergeant. He was the brother of Dennis and Carol Keiser of State College, PA and James and Pat Keiser of Woodbine and Patricia Biebl of Texas and the late Wally Keiser and the late Beverly Bobok and the late Shirley Stuart. Janice Marie Stelmach (nee Waltrup), 66, of Mt. Airy, formerly of Brooklyn Park, died April 7, 2008 in her home of complications from liver cancer. Janice was born on June 18, 1941 in Washington D.C. to Elizabeth Waltrup and the late Charles Waltrup. She was a retired secretary from both the Anne Arundel and Carroll County School systems. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, swimming, dancing, gardening and spending time with her family and friends. Henry Richard Sterle, age 89, of Mt. Airy, MD, died Saturday April 12, 2008 at Lorien Assisted Living in Mt. Airy, MD. He was born November 15, 1918 in Shoaf, PA the son of the late Joseph M. Sterle and the late Anna Pinteric Sterle. He resided in Collier, PA for most of his life, moving to Mt. Airy, MD in June 2003 where he resided at the Lorien Assisted Care Living and Nursing Home until his death. H e graduated from Georges High School where he played football and basketball. Graduated from West Virginia University in 1942 with a B.S. degree in Animal husbandry and agriculture science. He played football for West Virginia University. Received a Master’s Degree in education from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Served as an M.P. in Iran for 3 ½ years during WWII. Worked 20 years for the Veterans Administration program with “on the farm training” and Uniontown Vocational School. He taught for 15 years at Mt. Vernon High School in Fairfax County, VA. He was a lifetime member of the Uniontown VFW for over 50 years. As a member he was active in the daily card club. He is survived by his nephew Ronald J. Sterle, and his family, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio and his niece Joann S. Rockwell, and her family, of Mt. Airy, MD and a special friend Thomas Rihn and his family of Virginia. His career began in 1939 as an assistant messenger and ended as a Senior Editor Cartographic Supervisor of the Navy Hydrographic office. He served in the US Army in the Panama Canal Zone. Robert Clarence Shaw, of Mundelein, Ill., formerly of Taylorsville, MD died suddenly on Thursday May 8, 2008. He was 55 years old. A star athlete in high school and college and a successful business owner in his adult life, Robert was born and raised in the rolling hills of Carroll County, Maryland. Robert, with his twin brother, Ronald U. Shaw, attended South Carroll High School. There he starred in football and track, and was elected captain of both teams during his senior year. He was selected as the Scholar Athlete for the school by the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. Though he received offers of full scholarships to play football in college, he chose to attend Harvard with his twin brother. At Harvard, he excelled as defensive tackle on the football team. He was selected to the All Ivy Team twice, to the Associated Press All East Team as a senior, and he received Honorable All-American recognition in his senior year. After graduating from Harvard, Robert obtained his MBA from Columbia University. His career started with Container Corporation of America in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was quickly promoted to a position in Cupertino, CA. While in California, he met and married Katherine Szela.. Their son, Robert Jason Shaw, was born in 1987. Their daughter, Madeleine Celeste Shaw, followed in 1990. From California, Robert’s career took the family to Connecticut and then Illinois, where he became President of Contempo Design. He eventually started his own successful company, Innovaces, Inc., specialists in the design and manufacture of trade show exhibits. Robert was living in Mundelein, Illinois, at the time of his death. Besides his two children, Robert is survived by his mother Ruth E. Shaw (nee Condon) of Taylorsville, Maryland; his twin brother Ronald Shaw of Hereford, Maryland; and his brother Randall Shaw, also of Taylorsville, Maryland, as well as various nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Shaw. Mildred E. “Millie” Matzen (nee Smith), age 90, of Mt. Airy, died Monday May 12, 2008 at Heritage Harbour Health & rehabilitation Center in Annapolis, MD. She was born November 5, 1917 in Kessel, West Virginia; she was the daughter of the late David E. Smith and the late Dorothy Smith (nee Warner). As a young woman, Millie moved to Morgantown, West Virginia, to work as a nanny for Dr. and Mrs. Albert Reese, both professors at West Virginia University, who were lifelong friends. For 25 years, she was a furniture salesperson for O.J. Morrison’s and also worked as a part-time florist. Her first marriage to Arthur “Chick” Rose ended in divorce. After marrying Henry C. Matzen, she left Morgantown because of his naval career and lived in Chinhae, South Korea, and Huntington Beach, California. While in Huntington Beach, she discovered a love for painting and studied art at Coastline College with Gary Savage. Millie won numerous awards for her art, including first prize for a painting of the old Huntington Beach Pier destroyed by a hurricane. She was a prolific painter until the end of her life. Other passions included animals, both wild and domestic, vegetable and flower gardening, hosting dinner parties and her grandchildren. She and her husband moved to Mt. Airy 22 years ago to be near their family. She became a member and officer of the Eastern Star Order in Uniontown. Survivors include Henry C. Matzen, her husband of 45 years, daughter Margaret Rose Caro, son-in-law James Caro, granddaughter Christiana Caro, and grandson Peter Caro of Edgewater, MD; sister Audrey Curry, brother Reuben Smith, and sister-in-law Edith Smith of Moorefield, West Virginia; sister Trixie Howdershell of Berryville, Virginia, sister Dorothy Veach, of San Bernardino, California; sister in law Inge Matzen of Schupfheim, Switzerland; and several long and devoted nieces and nephews. David Brian Coates 55 of Westminster, MD died Wednesday June 4,
2008 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
The spouse of Rev. Mindy Booher Coates for 30 years.
Mr. Coates was born April 14, 1953 in Burlington, VT
The son of Robert and Anita Dudley Coates of Jacksonville,
FL., he was a 1971 graduate of Shaler High School in Pittsburgh
PA, has a B.S from Indiana University of PA.
Mr. Coates taught business subjects at Loch Raven High
School and coached Indoor Track from 1977-1979 during which time
he also worked at Pappy’s Pizza in Carney, MD.
He worked at MD Cup Corporation from 1979- 1985, Noxell
Corporation from 1985-1990 and Wells Fargo Mortgage Company from
1990 to present as a Computer Analyst
He was a member of Westminster Moose Lodge #1381 and also a
member and Treasurer of Taylorsville Winfield Lions Club both of
whom will be having memorial services on Friday 7:30 and 8:00 PM
respectively at the funeral home.
Mr. Coates provided technical support for Ross
Nickerson’s “The Banjo Encyclopedia” He enjoyed singing and
playing the Banjo and also gave Banjo lessons. He was one of the
four founding member of “Four Fun” a Barber Shop Group that
sang at many functions and Churches
with a highlight of singing at Camden Yards in 1997. He was
a member of Patapsco United Methodist Church and also very active
at Mount Gilead United Methodist Church.
He loved fishing, canoeing, camping, Watching the Orioles,
Ravens and Steelers, Movies relaxing with friends , Racket Ball,
Wally ball and Woodworking. He was a Red Belt in Traditional Tae
Kwon Do. He also continued to give to Legacy of Life Foundation.
Surviving him in addition to his wife and parents are: Son
and Daughter-in-law Justin and Alana Esposito Coates of Raleigh,
NC. Brothers and sister-in-laws Glen and Patricia Coates of
Suffield, CT, Dan and Shelly Coates of Fruit Cove, FL Sister and

James Lawrence McCumber age 60 of Sykesville, MD, died Saturday June 21, 2008 at the Dove House in Westminster. He was the spouse of Patricia Ann McCumber. Mr. McCumber was born March 25, 1948 in Baltimore, MD the son of Troy McCumber and Vivian (Loughry) McCumber. Mr. McCumber was an Inspector for Northrop Grumman. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran serving in the US Army 101st Airborne in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star, a commendation medal from the Army for his action. He enjoyed visiting the Smithsonian Museums and traveling to Skyline Drive. Clark Co. and over 17 years for the Howard County School Board. He loved playing Softball and he coached and played for the Woodbine Rebels Softball team. He loved going to Deep Creek Lake; hunting and fishing and enjoyed being with his family. He loved the Yankees Baseball team. He served in the US Army as a SGT. Mrs. Dorothy Rebecca Costley, 86, of 105 S. Center St., Westminster died Wednesday, July 23 at 12:30 PM after an extended illness, at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster, MD. She was the wife of the late John Wesley Costley. Born October 22, 1921 in West Friendship, MD, she was a daughter of the late Albert Augustus and late Carrie Rachel Thomas King. She was formerly employed at Henryton Hospital in Sykesville, and later Gould, Inc. in Westminster, where she later retired and was an Electronics assembler. She enjoyed cooking and baking, she was a foster mother to many children over the years. Mrs. Costley was a former member of Fairview United Methodist Church and later joined Union Memorial Baptist Church, and had been a constant supporter of that church. She is survived by one sister, Florence Emma Robinson of Port Norris, NJ, a sister-in-law Sandroa King of Port Norris, NJ, a foster daughter, Betty Ann Alexander of Westminster, a number of nieces and nephews, 3 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 4 sisters: Mabel Ivolee Henson, Mary Kathrine Horsey Whitaker, Alice Virginia Costley Baker and Agnes Lucille Sims; 4 brothers: John Albert King, Leo King, Howard Franklin King and Elmer Augustus King; and one grandchild. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard Melvin Dixon, devoted mother of Scott Long of TX, Mark Long and wife Tammy of Clearbrook, VA and Anne Marie Williams of Taylorsville, MD. She was the grandmother of Mary Elizabeth Williams and Mikey Williams; Ronny Anderson of Winchester, VA and Shannon Clarke of Delray, WV and Matthew Celata; great-grandmother of Shirenity Clarke, and Skylar, Heaven and Nevaeh Anderson. Vernon W. Mathena, Jr. age 76, of Granite, died Saturday August 2, 2008 at his home. He was born June 11, 1932 in Baltimore, MD the son of the late Vernon W. Mathena, Sr. and the late Ethelene Wilt Mathena. He was a Retired Baltimore County Fireman engine #18 from May 12, 1956-May 25, 1973. He served in the Army from June 4, 1953-October 18, 1954. He was the founder of Mathena Septic Tank Service. He enjoyed Farming, Hunting, Fishing, Nascar Racing and most importantly spending time with his family. Former owner of Granite Mobile Home Park. Mrs. Barnes worked as a nurse for 20 years at Carroll Hospital Center and later became a School Nurse for Howard County Public Schools before retiring in 2007. She was a 1958 graduate of Mt. He was a master carpenter, painter and farmer in Taylorsville, MD. Recently he retired due to health issues and devoted his life to farming, his home and his family. Grace (Crofts) Parker-Acker, age 83, of Taylorsville for 24 years, formerly of Lutherville and Huntington, West Virginia. She died Tuesday October 14, 2008 at her home. She was the wife of the late Richard Parker and the late Ellsworth Acker. She was born April 25, 1925 in Prineville, OR the daughter of the late Rev. William Henry Crofts; her father founded Open Door Baptist Church in Huntington, WV. And the late Eleanor (Wilson) Crofts, Her father was an Immigrant from England and missionaries to China. Mrs. Kathleen Irene Snowden died Thursday, October 16, 2008 at her home in New Market. Born in Mount Airy on August 1, 1933, she was the wife of the late William Kenneth Snowden and daughter of the late Grafton Ignatius and Goldie Irene Dorsey. Mrs. Snowden was a member of Simpson Christian Community Church, New Market. She retired from the National Institutes of Health after 42 years of service as a branch chief. Kathleen was the first African-American woman elected to the New Market Town Council. She was an avid collector of black history memorabilia and was the author of four books The Town of New Market Along the Old National Road, History of the African American School, History of the African American Church and Through the Years with Edward ‘Jack’ and Martha White. Mrs. Snowden owned and operated the African-American Specialty Shop in New Market in the early 1970s. She is survived by a son, Steve Morrison, Frederick; granddaughter Natasha Morrison, Westminster; one sister, Toni Dorsey, Frederick; three brothers, Grafton Dorsey, Woodbine; Asa Dorsey, Gaithersburg; Larry Dorsey, Halifax, Virginia; devoted niece, Midge Thomas, Mount Airy; and devoted nephews Jeffrey Morrison, New Market; Randy Snowden, Frederick; and Monroe Morrison, Westminster. She was preceded in death by five sisters Betty Wilson, Rose Warden, Sandra Morrison, Penny Ziegler, and Dorothy Voorhees and four brothers, Alvin Dorsey, Buddy Dorsey, Hildred Dorsey, Herman Dorsey, and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Cordelia Manger departed this life quietly early on Saturday, October 18 2008 in Baltimore, MD. She was born June 4, 1917 in Colby Wisconsin, the first child of the Rev. Albert and Sarah Scherry. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter C. Manger. Her early life was spent in Orrville, OH where she completed her secondary education. She graduated in 1939 from the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH, where she majored in Speech and English. After graduation she taught English and Speech in several high schools in Northeastern and Southwestern OH. With the outbreak of WWII, she joined the US Signal Corps and quickly became Chief of Receiving for Patterson Air Service Command at Wright Field near Dayton, OH. Through her work in settling Air Force contracts with civilian companies, she met Walter Manger and they were married on November 25, 1943. The couple moved to Baltimore, where Walter was employed by Bendix Corporation, a supplier of radios and other electronics for the US Army Air Corps. Baltimore was to be their life-long home, living in the suburbs of Pikesville, Essex and finally Catonsville, her home for 48 years. As her two sons grew older Cordelia returned to teaching initially as a substitute and then full-time at Catonsville Junior High School, where she was well-known for her classes in English and American history, finally retiring in 1972. Cordelia was a life lone Presbyterian and very active in the church life and mission of Catonsville Presbyterian Church, which she joined in 1950. After Walters death in 1974 she became a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and worked full-time and then part-time at the Presbyterian Home of MD in Towson through the 1980’s. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a giving, caring person, particularly by her family, who will miss her love and devotion so freely given during her life. Surviving her are Sister Virginia Jones of Wilmington, NC 2 Sons Walter L. Manger of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Thomas L. Manger of Westminster, MD , 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by brother Leroy Scherry and Sister Eleanor Job. Inurnment will be with the other members of her family, including her parents and brother in Magley Indiana. Mrs. Hilda R. Porter, 85 of Mt. Airy, died Wednesday November 5, 2008 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was born October 1, 1923 in Sykesville, MD the daughter of the late Felix and late Minnie (Miller) Linton. She was the wife of the late William E. Porter who predeceased her in 2000. Mrs. Porter was a member of the Howard Chapel-Ridgeville United Methodist Church. She retired from the National Cancer Institute in 1998 where she worked as a Laboratory Technician. Jay William Conaway 84 of Fairhaven, Sykesville, MD, died Wednesday November 5, 2008 at the Dove House in Westminster. Mr. Conaway was born September 15, 1924 in Winfield, MD the son of the late Jay and Amy Conaway. He was the husband of 62 years to Ethel L. Conaway. After graduation from Sykesville High School he was drafted and served in the 14th Air Force in China/India/Burma Theatre under General Chennault. He owned and operated Conaway General Store in Winfield for 25 years. After giving up the store he became a rural mail carrier for Sykesville Post Office from which he retired. He was a member of Winfield Bible Chapel and the Ebenezer Owls Senior Group. He was a former Charter Member of the Taylorsville-Winfield Lions Club and the Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Company. Surviving in addition to his wife are Son and daughter-in-law Gary and Barbara Conaway of Silver Spring, MD Grandson Benjamin Conaway of Cherry Hill, NJ Granddaughter Amy Conaway of Chicago, IL. Paul Gabriel Churchill, 63 of Eldersburg, MD, died Friday November 7, 2008 at his home. He was the spouse of the late Jo Ann (Grammer) Churchill. Who passed away in 1989. He was born July 31, 1945 in Washington, D.C. The son of the late Murray V. Churchill and Lucille (Craven) Churchill. Mr. Churchill was a graduate of The University of MD and held a Masters Degree from Towson State University. He was a member of Pershing Rifles He was co-founder of Watson’s Tin Box, He was also a member Baker St. Irregulars. He began his teaching career at Longfellow Elementary School and later taught at Centennial High School and most recently was a Latin Adjunct Professor at Hood College in Frederick. Mr. Churchill taught several Sherlock Homes Appreciation classes in the local region. Surviving are Sons and Daughter-in-laws Mark G. and Susan Churchill of Lincoln, Nebraska, Gregory and Danielle Churchill of Parkville, MD. Brothers: James R. Churchill of Alexandria, VA and David M. She was the spouse of the late James Carlton Sier. Mrs. Sier was born July 16, 1925 in Frederick MD the daughter of the late Guy Thomas and the late Elsie Davis Thomas. She was a seamstress for Mt. Airy Clothing Company , A Member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy, MD , a Member of the Mt. Airy 55+ Club and Senior Center. She also enjoyed cooking. Allen Jay White, age 67, of Sykesville, died Sunday November 30, 2008 at his home. He was born June 16, 1941 in Murray, Utah the son of the late Allen Joseph White and the late Geneva Lucille White (nee Enquist). He was the husband of Janice Lee Widdison White. He was a Professional Consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton from 2004 to present, before from 1971-2004 he worked fro National Security Agency. He was a member of the Peace Corps- Ghana Africa. Mr. White moved frequently as child as his father was in the military, Long Beach, CA, New York, NY and Monterey,CA. His family settled permantly in Monterey, CA where he attended high school. He then attended several universities; BS from Brigham Young Univ., MS from BYU and further education at Montana State Univ., MA from Brigham Young University and further graduate work at Montana State University. He was the father of David White of Las Vegas, Timothy White of Tucson, Arizona, Christopher White of Provo, Utah, Erin Hansen of Idaho, Lauren Markham of Frederick and Matthew White of Provo, Utah. Rebecca Sue Myers 61 of Mt. Airy, MD, died Peacefully Christmas Eve, December 24, 2008 at Brinton Woods in Winfield, MD. She was born December 1, 1947 in Frederick MD the daughter of the late Dr. Lyndon B. Myers and the late Mary Lawyer Myers of Mt. Airy. When Becky was born with Down’s syndrome, her parents were advised to institutionalize. Instead they and a small group of parents from Carroll County fought to provide educational opportunities for their disabled children and in 1955 the first class was operational in a small building in Wildwood Park in Mt. Airy. Mary Myers was the teacher and the children were bused back in forth in a new station wagon that was donated by the Mt. Airy Lions Club. Becky lived at home with her parents and then 5 years with her sister and her family and in 1989 moved to an assisted living unit run by Target Community and Educational Services in Westminster, MD. Over the years Becky attended school in Johnsville and the Carroll County Center for Exceptional Children. She worked for the Carroll County Association for Retarded Citizens and then Carroll Haven or CHANGE as it is known today. She also attended the Westminster Senior Center and Family Active Day in Westminster. Becky made friends everywhere she went, shaking hands, introducing herself and asking your name. She never missed a gentleman wearing a “nice tie”. She knew all the clerks from Wal-Mart to Safeway (College Square) where she needed to visit her favorite friend, a cashier, almost daily. Surviving her are sisters, Mary Lynn Kuhn of Mt. Airy, Martha Jane and husband Ed Brown of Hedgesville, WV, Sara and husband Leslie Monk of Leigh-on-Sea, England, and Polly Ann Mazcko of Berlin, MD Brother Lyndon L. Myers of Braddock Heights.
